This unit consists of six topics about adolescents' feelings about foster care and losses, their anger and shame, and the need to identify and use their strengths.
Topics
3.1 The Shame in Foster Care - Children from even the worst
abuse and neglect feel responsible for their condition and so
feel shame. The remedy for shame is openness.
3.2 Children Need Their Own Stories - To children in public
care, their stories of pain, loss, survival and recovery are
normal. These stories need to be told to and heard by caring
adults who do not shy away from painful details.
3.3 We Can't Make Their Losses Go Away - Time heals all
wounds but nothing takes away the scars. We need to put
repeated opportunities for healing in the paths of our youth but
not expect them to get over their traumas.
3.4 Teens Have a Right to Their Anger - We need to stand
with youth in the anger and hurt they feel so that they can begin
to manage these feelings and use that energy more productively.
3.5 Finding Strengths in the Guise of Weakness - When a
teen gets a "reputation", are there strengths we can recognize
and use in this behavior?
3.6 What About Belonging for Youth Who are Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, or Questioning?
Homophobia is so woven into our personal and social fiber, it
seems to go deeper than racism. Because of this, these young
people are the most in need of family belonging and the least
likely to be considered.
