This unit consists of six topics providing guidance on how to bring up permanence to teens, why they often say no and what to do about it, and preparing teens for family (re)connections.
Topics
5.1 Does Permanence Mean Forcing Adoption on Every 18 Year
Old? Permanence is not about force at the eleventh hour. Its about
educating teens and empowering them to make permanence real, either
while they are in our care or outside of it.
5.2 Does Bringing Up Permanence Set Teens Up for More
Rejection? Social workers are afraid of re-traumatizing teens with talk of
permanence. But, just because we dont discuss it doesnt mean they dont
feel it.
5.3 Of Course They Say NO! With the experiences most teens have had
in birth families, foster care, and the system, its no wonder they say no
to adoption.
5.3 A Teens NO! Means a Host of Things When asked if they
want to be adopted, does a teens no mean I dont know or Im afraid?
What does it mean and how do we find out?
5.5 Who Do YOU Want at Your Next Employee Review? Service
Plan Reviews can turn into a painful cataloguing of a teens missteps. If we
want to engage a youth in the process of identifying caring adults for the
future, we need to conduct these meetings differently.
5.6 Preparing Teens for Family (Re)Connections - Teens need to deal
with issues of loyalty to birth families and loss, as well as experiential
preparation for entering family life.
